JOSE FRANCISCO BORGES
osΘ Francisco Borges is a Brazilian folk poet and graphic artist. He started out selling chapbooks on market day by singing songs related to the stories he sold. Chapbooks, pamphlet stories in verse, are very popular in many parts of Latin America. In Brazil they are sold by the thousands each week by market vendors. Brazilian chapbooks feature popular poetry and legends, accounts of local catastrophes, infamous love affairs, and famous crimes. The covers of these pamphlets are usually decorated with woodcut illustrations.
Interested in cutting his costs and following his creative instincts, Borges began to make his own woodcut covers and to produce the chapbooks himself. Today he is one of BrazilÆs most acclaimed folk artists. His chapbooks and other graphics are available in local markets and sold as well to foreign collectors and museums.
